Description of the project
CHOICE 2000 On-Line School is an accredited public
high school and middle school in California. Under the Chater Schools Act
(sb 1440) Innovative schools may develope new methods of teaching to enhance
the progression of education. CHOICE 2000 is proud to be the front runner
in providing jr. and senior high classes on-line from the student's home
at virtually no cost. CHOICE 2000 will provide books, course work, teachers
and software to the student. Unlike other k-12 schools, you never ride a
bus, and school is always open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Like other
schools, we offer math, english, science, history, and Social Studies. We
offer Virtual Classrooms where the teacher is present with the students.
We even offer Spanish and French with Real Time Voice Telecommuting on-line.
This is a completely on-line educational program covering grades 7-12. Students
communicate with the school from their home via computer modem. Utilizing
a bulletin board service (BBS) adapted specifically for the school and an
Internet webserver, students attend class, receive assignments, turn in
homework, and socialize with friends. In addition to meeting standard curriculum
requirements, students also learn advanced computer knowledge and word processing
skills. Once acclimated to this virtual environment, students independently
venture further into computer technology by way of additional software programs,
other commercial on-line services, and the Internet. In this distance learning
format, the school facility is reduced to a small office building. Teachers
have the opportunity to work in the office or telecommute from their homes.
Classes are held in a teleconference format similar to an Internet chat-room,
where more than 40 students can attend. In this format, teachers may present
other information, hold discussions, or answer student questions. In addition
to teleconference, teachers and students communicate regularly through e-mail.
CHOICE 2000 fills a void that in the past prevented some people from attaining
their educational goals. Students have many different reasons for attending.
A number are gifted and felt "held back" by traditional school programs.
Some have physical or mental impairments which inhibit their ability to
attend a distant school facility for 6 hours a day on a daily basis. Other
reasons range from fear of violence on campus; a student's high degree of
interest in computer technology; or reluctance to ride a school bus two
hours a day.
