Description of the project
«Young reporters for the environment »
is an environmental education programme designed for secondary school
students. 101 secondary schools in 9 European countries (Cyprus, Denmark,
France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, United Kingdom)
participate to that project today. The network works as a virtual
press agency specialised in delivering news about the environment.
Each school participates in an investigation team composed of 3 to
6 schools of different countries willing to work on a common subject
(« selective collection of domestic waste » or «
biological agriculture » for example) in different places in
Europe. These teams are grouped in 6 headings - or forums - : Agriculture,
Cities, Coastline, Energy, Waste and Water. Working in the frame of
« Young reporters for the environment » project implies
2 dimensions. The local level : with the assistance of a pedagogical
team, the students carry out a journalistic inquiry on a local problem
linking environmental and scientific issues and get directly in touch
with the concerned actors (politicians, businesses, associations,
laboratories, consumers, etc.). They then inform the regional public
of their findings trough exhibitions, conferences and publish articles
in partnership with the local press. The European level : The students
co-operate with the members of their investigation team using Internet
to realise one or more articles in common on the chosen theme. The
best articles are chosen and produced in the 1998 Magazine. In spring,
some students will participate to the international missions, gathering
5 to 20 special envoys during 10 days on a site illustrating the problem
studied in their heading. The objectives of the project are ·
to place the students as real actors of their own education ·
to inform the students of the role of the scientists in the studies
of environmental challenges and of the solutions to promote ·
to give them a vision of the professional world · to allow
them to better understand and perceive the construction of Europe
· to encourage project based pedagogy and innovations in teaching
techniques.
