Some of My Thoughts About the e-Hermes Project

St. George is a very famous saint in the Eastern Christian Churches. In Cappadocia in central Anatolia you will find a lot of very old churches with fine frescos depicting St. George killing the dragon. Nowadays the inner sense of these icons may be translated as the killing of the dangerous beast of environmental pollution (or the beast of misunderstanding of nations). The e-Hermes Project will help St. George to keep down both problems in  future times because of training our students to accept and understand the roots of the problems. In that way I find it is very important for our students to get in contact with others to learn and solve problems in a collective way. Being extremely fast expanding cities, Istanbul and Athens suffer from serious problems with air-pollution.
Unfortunately, these problems are frequently neglected by the public and creating an awareness of their impact on every individual student’s future is sometimes hard work for teachers. Consequently, I believe in the importance of measuring and comparing data, and – probably even more useful – in their interpretation. I expect another important advantage of the project, which is the contact students are going to establish with the help of the modern means of communication provided by the worldwide web.
Thus, I hope the project will be continued and we will have a chance to contribute.
