Political Culture in Germany and the European Union

Objectives

  • Raise European Awareness,
  • Create interest in European unification,
  • Familiarize students with field work.

Connection to the Curriculum
This activity has been undertaken within the framework of the social studies curriculum.

Procedure

Teachers' preparation
Press articles have been collected by the teacher and then given to pupils as reflection papers.

Students' preparation
Pupils have been asked to read in advance the relevant chapters from their books, as well as the press articles distributed by the teacher. They should choose something that is intriguing and then search in the Internet to collect relevant data.

Description of activities in the classroom
The teacher asked the pupils to express their thoughts (questions, comments) as regards the material they had received, as well as to announce the topic that chose to investigate and explain the reasons for their choice. The pupils were then grouped in teams according to the topics selected. They were asked to prepare short presentations on the following topics: acceptance of the process of European integration, Germany's position towards countries in Eastern Europe, immigration, attitudes towards foreigners, the right wing extremism in Germany and other European countries.

Duration
The duration of these activities was four hours.

How to present facts in an article,
to write a commentary, and to edit texts.


Objectives
Express themselves in different writing styles, and more specifically familiarize the students with the journalistic way of writing.

Connection to the Curriculum
This activity has been undertaken within the framework of the German class. The pupils have been asked to collect data about their school activities and present these activities in an article that will be published in a newspaper.

Procedure

Teachers' preparation
The teacher discussed with the journalist the guidelines that she should give to the pupils on how to write an article as well as how she could assist them in their work.

Students' preparation
Pupils have been asked to work in teams and collect data on the activities of their school and prepare a presentation. They have been also asked to read the guidelines "on how to write an article" provided by the journalist. The students had also the possibility to ask questions to the journalist via e-mail.

Description of activities in the classroom
Pupils presented the results of their work in the classroom. Then, the teacher underlined some issues of interest to all the students as regards "article writing in a professional way", and also helped them to see the differences between the various styles of writing. Then , students had to work further with their articles in order to present them in a newspaper.

The duration of these activities was two hours.

What is "Europe"?


Objectives

  • Study of the various aspects of "building" the European Union,
  • Raising European awareness.

Connection to the Curriculum
This activity has been undertaken within the framework of several subjects, such as History, Geography, German.

Procedure

Teachers' preparation
Close study of the data, and collaboration with the other teachers in order to see the interconnections.

Students' preparation
Students have been asked to study carefully the results from the survey as well as their notes from the first discussions. Their task then was to work in groups and write an article on issues raised by the results of the survey that they think that should be further discussed. These issues should have been related to the History and Geography of Europe. They have been asked also to pay attention to the conflicting data.

Description of activities in the classroom
Students presented their work in History and Geography class, and discussed with their classmates why they though it was of importance the topic they chose to discuss further. Connections to their previous knowledge have been made and effort has been placed to assist them more carefully into the conflicting data.

The duration of these activities was in total six hours.

"Do I know my neighbours"?


Objectives

  • Get acquainted with other teenagers' views,
  • Study attitudes in relation to history.

Connection to the Curriculum
This activity has been undertaken within the framework of German language class and Informatics.


Procedure

Teachers' preparation
Find material relevant to the topics of the questionnaire in order to give them to the students to reflect upon.

Students' preparation
The students had to study the material distributed by the teacher.

Description of activities in the classroom
Students have been asked to work in small groups and discuss the topics that were of interest to them. They had also to look in the EUROSPIN results in order to find also there some answers or topics that merit their attention. Discussions in classroom followed, and then the teacher asked from each group to write an article in a particular topic. This article should reflect the discussions that took place in the classroom.

Interpretation of statistical analysis


Objectives

  • Learn to "read" the results of a research,
  • Realize the problems and limitations of statistical analysis.


Connection to the Curriculum
This activity has been undertaken within the framework of Modern Greek class, Informatics, and Economics.

Procedure

Teachers' preparation
The teachers collaborated in order to study the results of EUROSPIN research, and select interesting issues that merit to be further discussed and fit to their curriculum.

Students' preparation
Students had to look also in the results of the interviews, study the data provided and think how they should interpret the results taking into consideration the limitations of statistical analysis.

Description of activities in the classroom
During the various classes, students discussed the results from different perspectives. More specifically, the students during Economics and Informatics were asked to compare the results having always in mind the rules of statistics and the difficulties of every statistical analysis. During Modern Greek class, they have been asked to compile the results of their discussions and present them in form of newspaper articles.
