On 24 the of April 1998 we, the classes 7B and 7C, visited the veterinary surgeon medicine university of Vienna – Floridsdorf. After the visit of the equipment we occupied us with the subject UV. As introduction we heard a very interesting and informative speech of a university professor about the foundations of UV.
Where are you mostly
exposed to the UV?
In the professional activities you are exposed with 49,7% to the UV- rays. Almost the same high percentage (36,1%) is observed in the free-time. With a smaller surcharge of 13,3% you have to expect in the vacations. Surprisingly low is the UV (0,9%) in solaria.
What is the UV-index?
The UV-index is a measurement without dimension for biological- effective intensity of irradiation of the solar UV-rays.
1UVI = 0,36 MED/h (min. erythemdosis)

Erythem = sunburn
1 UVI = 0,90 SED/h

Upon which factors depends
the calculation of the UV?
* height of the sun
* content of ozone (measured by satellites)
* altitude
* 16 wave-length (297,5 to 380 nm)
* spectral function of effect for the UV-index: CIE – Erythem

Dispersion of ozone on the earth:
In the tropics is the ozone surcharge the smallest, in the middle geographic latitude is the surcharge very high.
Exactly spoken, the ozone- lack exists only on the south-pole.
Ozone- lack = decrease of ozone concentration
The ozone surcharge depends on the geographic latitude, because the angle of incidence of the sun is very important.
Everybody who is interested to the ozone concentration on the earth can look in the homepage of the veterinary surgeon medicine university.
