If we measure the pH of
the rain at the beginning of the measuring period, we will observe
that the rain is acid as a consequence of the waste gases, which
are concentrated in the atmosphere. However, later on we observe
that the pH of the rain in our country is on good/normal levels.
The acidity of the rain in Austria is observed to be on dangerous
levels. The results of the rain acidity measurements may vary due
to some factors such as the school location. For example, if the
school, where the measurements have been take is located in an/industrial
area, where the concentration of the waste gases in the atmosphere
is much higher than the one in Greece. (Our school for example isn't
located in an industrial area). The same factors may influence
the rain acidity measurements in Germany as well,
because according to these measurements the rain in Germany is very
acid too.

The reasons for the lower
pH in our area surely are the power plants that produce CO2 and
SO2 and the heavy traffic in the Rhein - Main area with a lot of
NOX. These chemicals are reacting with water to acids. Beside these
facts there is a trash burning facility in Frankfurt and one is
added near by. These installations do have gas-cleaning facilities
but for sure this is not enough and so the pH is lower than in the
area of your school. Posted by Gueorgui Karagiaourov Freiherr-vom-Stein,
