Data processing - Classroom Activities - Article writing and editing

Vassiliki Kollia asked from the partners to briefly present their work with the pupils.
Heinz Wagner from Kurier spoke about the meetings he had with the pupils from Schwechat both at their school and Kurier. More specifically, he met twice the pupils in their school, and once in Kurier. Before pupils' visit in Kurier, Heinz Wagner asked them to write individually profiles of their school, in order to do the compilation of the reports in the newspaper and provide Heinz Wagner with one profile for their school. During their visit in Kurier, the pupils wrote also the first draft of the articles. The pupils worked in groups of 4 to 5 persons. The articles written have been presented to the partners. The only point to underline is the fact that these articles referred only to the preferences and attitudes of the Austrian pupils (see Annex, Draft articles from Austria). Teachers from Schwechat as well as the journalist have been asked to work further with the pupils in order to include also the opinions of the youngsters in other countries.

Manfred Lohr toke the floor and presented more in depth the school activities (see Annex, Activities of BG & BRG Schwechat). He also spoke about the meetings pupils had with the journalist as well as the way the teachers integrated the project activities in several subject areas.

Then, Vassiliki Kollia presented on behalf of Bernd Klewitz the activities of the pupils in Gymnasium Philippinum in Germany. In Philippinum they have in their social studies curriculum a topic prescribed "Political culture in Germany and the European Union". In this context teachers prepared related texts from a standard book on "Politics in Germany" and newspaper articles. Most of these articles were taken from the Internet - partly in English, as this is a bilingual course. Incorporated were also the results of the Shell Studie 2000. Pupils were asked to read and summarize the above mentioned material, collect further information and make a presentation in the classroom. They have further discussed the material and evaluate it. Then, they have selected information, reorganized it, analysed different text types, and prepared short presentations. The big problem Philippinum is facing is the fact that there is no journalist and newspaper to collaborate with. Heinz Wagner from Kurier agreed to assist more closely the pupils in their work.

Dagmar Schaeffer from Ellinogermaniki Agogi presented the activities of the schools in Greece. She spoke about the problem both schools have faced, meaning the fact that pupils moving from Gymnasium to Lyceum have been splitten in three different classes. So, the teachers had to be very flexible in order to find time and place to gather the pupils as well as to involve the other pupils that the previous year did not participated in the interviews. Dagmar Schaeffer pointed out that the discussions have started already in May 2000. She also referred to the meetings the pupils had with the journalist. One last problem that has been mentioned was the availability of PCs. Pupils don't have access all the time to PCs and the Internet. Thus, it has been decided to print all the results and distributed them to the pupils. Finally, Dagmar Schaeffer presented the timeline to be followed. More specifically, it has been decided that a second discussion of the journalist with the pupils at their schools will take place either on 13th or 15th December 2001. Pupils will receive specific guidelines on how they should write their articles. Pupils by then should have worked in groups, each group being responsible for one question. Since the questions are few, one question may be at the same time be the subject of work for two groups. Then, each group will look more closely the results, in order to see what other topics could be relevant to the analysis of their own topic. The pupils should also locate resources and write the first draft of their articles. The last meeting with the journalist will take place in the middle of January 2001.

Olga Megalaki from ECCHAT presented the activities of the French schools (see Annex, Activities of French schools). The main problem they are facing is the fact that they have started with a delay their work and they are trying to catch up the other schools. There was also a problem finding a new journal after "Le Monde" refused to participate. So, the first contact of pupils with the journalist occurred with a delay in comparison to the other countries.

Then, the steps of our work till the editing of the articles have been discussed and agreed. More specifically, the articles will be published at the end of February 2001 - beginning of March 2001. In their final version the articles should be ready by 15th February 2001, in order to be send to Ellinogermaniki Agogi for their translation in the four languages. Then, the translated articles will be re - distributed to the newspapers involved in order to be included in the publications.

Vassiliki Kollia should provide the teachers with a list of the Logbooks they should send.
