Eurospin - 2/2000 - Important Points about Research and Working with the Students

General Conditions

  • Anonymity of the interviewee
  • Check the legal conditions for interviewing young people in your country.
  • The interviewer himself should fill in the questionnaire, not the interviewee.
  • The singularity of the meeting is an important condition for honesty. It is better not to interview friends or neighbours.
  • We need to prepare a standard introduction: Which information will be given to the interviewee?

  • Preparation in the class
  • As a preparation, students can interview each other.
  • Everybody has to interpret the questions in the same way - discuss them.
  • Think about confidence and data protection. If it makes sense, let the students sign something about secrecy.

  • Realization
  • The interviews have to be equal.

  • a)Everyone has to read the same text - no additional comments!
b)If there are inquiries concerning the meaning of a questions, there can be given an explanation by the interviewer, but no interpretation!
  • Only use the given answers and the given categories. Don't add any new ones. If there are supplements, statements, commentaries, take it down at the end of the questionnaire or on an extra sheet of paper.
  • Two different kinds of questions: Questions to be answered spontaneously and questions to think about.
  • Interviewers should push the interviewee to make decisions - but in a charming, smart way.
  • Interview without audience.
  • If they want to interview in a very professional way, they have to document the refusals. ("I respect your refusal, just one request, would you please explain it?")
  •
