Project's Description

In a rapidly changing world characterized by a fast globalization process culture and cultural diversity as a force of social and transnational cohesion is of great importance and should be considered as a fundamental element of young people education. Young people should be aware of the importance of the national as well the world cultural heritage and should be educated enough to protect and conserve their cultural tradition. However cultural education is an on-going process and a long- term objective. A lot of systematic effort is needed so that the future citizens become culturally aware.

The proposed project aims at promoting through education student's awareness of the positive value of culture and thus at making young people aware of their history, values and heritage. Within the framework of the proposed project the students will have the opportunity to learn about the world cultural heritage sites and more specifically about the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae, an archaeological site included since 1986 in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The famous temple to the god of healing and the sun was built towards the middle of the 5th century B.C. in the lonely heights of the Arcadian mountains. The temple which has the oldest Corinthian capital yet found, combines the archaic style and the serenity of the Doric style with some daring architectural features.

Through the design and the implementation of a series of educational and participatory activities the project seeks to encourage students to understand and appreciate the importance of cultural heritage and furthermore enable tomorrow's decision makers to respond to the threats facing the world heritage sites in nowadays and in the future.

The proposed project will give students the possibility to experience a totally different way of visiting archaeological sites through the use of new technological applications and services. The students will visit the archaeological site of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae and learn about its history, importance as well as current threats caused by environmental and human factors through the use of advance mobile services. The use of mobile phones and PDA devices with Internet access will ensure that learning will be participative, interactive, engaging, effective and sustainable over place and time. This philosophy is founded on the premise that people learn best when engrossed in the topic, participating in activities that motivate learning and enable them to synthesize their own understanding. The main goal is active exploration, construction, and learning as opposed to textbook reading and lecture comprehension.
