The sporadic nature of the demand for Greek as a foreign language makes ODL not merely an add on to the conventional material, but rather an integral part of the project.

Athina is developing multimedia and internet-based tools:

• aiming at a flexible, component-based architecture to electronic tools
• taking into account the limitations of existing infrastructure and constantly investigating the optimal distribution of multimedia content. 
• paying particular attention to pedagogical design and principles. 
• constantly  focusing on the comparative advantage and the added value of the produced tools .

The limitations of existing hardware and software influence the optimal distribution of multimedia content between a CD-ROM and a Web page significantly. A situative procedure has been used in order to get the best of the two worlds ; i.e. the storage capabilities of the CD ROM, and the possibility of continuos updating, provided by the Web.

The pedagogical design of the tools refers primarily to the steps taken in order to focus on the specific aspects of language learning. Athina places a heavy emphasis on the use of speech, the possibility of collaborating between students and teachers and the production tools that allow for more substantive interaction between the tool and the teacher / student.

Finally, Athina produces materials that are explicitly designed with a view towards “added value”. This means, that all programming activities are aimed at producing content with up-to date authoring tools. Technological components are produced only if existing sophisticated products do not suit the needs of the project.
