Needs
Analysis
The Needs Analysis conducted within the framework of Athina demonstrated
the wide diversity of the target group. Students of modern greek have some
things in common. Nonetheless, the differences are numerous. The right
side of this page contains the main results of the Analysis.

The
results of this inquiry demonstrated a remarkable diversity of the target
group. The general results could be summarized as follows:
-
There were significant differences in
prior knowledge of greek
-
Although students had a common background
(significant knowledge of other languages - high educational level - mostly
basic knowledge of ancient Greek) their motives for learning modern Greek
ranged from simple curiosity to an academic interest for an understanding
of the differences between modern and ancient Greek.
-
Despite this, their expressed needs
were more or less common. For instance in answering the question " Please
rank the skills you would like to develop after attending this course",
more than 90% ranked their need to communicate first.
-
Important similarities were noted in
the expression of preferences towards the teaching method. Most of the
students practically depicted the communicative approach in non technical
terms.
A question that
remains open is, whether these results can be generalized to include the
whole target group of greek learners. There are not many similar analyses,
and most of the existing analyses were primarily targeted at beginners.
