Needs Analysis
The Needs Analysis conducted within the framework of Athina demonstrated the wide diversity of the target group. Students of modern greek have some things in common. Nonetheless, the differences are numerous.

Pedagogical Objectives
The material was produced in accordance with the results of the Needs Analysis conducted.

Technological Objectives
The needs analysis demonstrated, that the flexibility of Open Distance Learning should be an integral part of Athina.

The list of the Pedagogical Objectives was set up after the completion of  the Needs Analysis:
  • The material should be rich, adaptable, motivating and diversified. Because of the wide diversities observed, it was felt, that the material should include a wealth of different excercises and be easily adaptable to the needs of each class.
  • The material should obey to the principles of the communicative approach. The questionnaire indicated that the motives of the students would be best served through the adoption of the principles that underlie the communicative approach.
  • The material should include authentic texts and refer to real life situations. Practically all questionnaires indicated the students' desire for a modern comprehensive teaching material, that would not limit itself to preconstructed situations. It became clear that all of the material including texts, excercises and pictures should be authentic.
